Facial Aesthetics

Rhinoplasty

Nose surgeries are performed due to health issues or aesthetic concerns. Health problems can be grouped into two main categories:

**1. Structural Problems in the Nose**

Structural problems can prevent proper breathing and reduce the nose’s functional ability. These issues can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. They may be genetic or occur due to trauma, causing narrowing or blockage of the nasal airways.

**2. Cosmetic Deformities of the Nose**

Nasal shape deformities can also result from genetic factors or later trauma, such as bumps, falls, burns, or certain diseases. Such deformities may cause psychological distress. Rhinoplasty can partially or fully correct these problems.

**Cosmetic Nose Surgeries**

Patients seeking rhinoplasty for aesthetic reasons usually want their nose reshaped to better match their facial structure. Although the patient’s wishes are considered, the final decision should rely on the surgeon’s experience and medical knowledge to achieve both aesthetic and functional results.

Often, people request noses resembling celebrities or popular figures. The surgeon’s role is to assess whether the patient truly needs the procedure and, if necessary, advise against it. If the nose affects appearance or self-confidence, rhinoplasty is performed.

**Nose Shape and Facial Proportion**

The nose should be proportional to the face and not draw unnecessary attention. During face-to-face interaction, people usually look at the eyes and lips, not the nose. Rhinoplasty aims to achieve a natural-looking result that fits the facial structure.

**Who Can Have Rhinoplasty?**

Rhinoplasty can be performed once facial growth is complete. The final shape of the nose requires full development, which must be verified by experienced doctors, including the patient’s psychological readiness.

**Revision Rhinoplasty**

If a patient is dissatisfied with a previous rhinoplasty, a revision procedure can be performed after consultation with the surgeon. Revision surgeries are more complex than primary rhinoplasties because the nose has been previously altered.

**Deviated Septum Surgery**

A deviated septum can affect the internal structures alone or both internal and external structures, causing visible asymmetry. Severe deviations can obstruct airways, affecting oxygen intake, sleep quality, and overall health. Surgery corrects internal and external deviations to improve breathing and aesthetics.

**Preoperative Considerations**

Some medications may need to be restricted before surgery. Standard preoperative anesthesia rules apply. Instructions are provided by the surgeon and medical staff.

**How Rhinoplasty Is Performed**

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in a properly equipped hospital operating room. Techniques may be open or closed, and surgery typically lasts 1–3 hours.

**Postoperative Recovery**

Patients usually stay one night in the hospital. Temporary swelling and bruising may occur but subside over time. If nasal packing is used, it is removed after 2–4 days. Splints are removed around days 6–8 once partial bone healing occurs. Open rhinoplasty may leave a faint scar.

Mild drainage and congestion may occur in the first few days. Swelling inside the nose may slightly affect breathing for up to a month. Medications prescribed by the doctor help reduce swelling.

**Return to Work**

Recovery time depends on the surgical technique, the procedures performed, patient healing capacity, and type of work. Desk workers may return after four days if they are not concerned about splints’ appearance. Active jobs may require 7–10 days.

**Other Considerations**

Smoking negatively impacts healing. Patients should avoid sun exposure for three months. After closed rhinoplasty, extra sun protection is not required, but general skin care is recommended. Activities like swimming or running may be limited depending on the surgery. Consult the doctor regarding contact lenses and glasses.

**Complete Recovery**

Full recovery from rhinoplasty typically takes 3–6 months.
